First, let me summarize three pieces of data from [1] and add a new piece of data from Tae Matsumoto to show that there is a phenomenal surge of smartphone ownership in Japan:

Global Smartphone Penetration by Region 2009-2014 (2010-06-20) predicted a 5% Japanese smartphone ownership in 2011.
Tae Matsumoto (松本多恵) of Nara Women's University (奈良女子大學) in a survey of 125 students in the first two months of 2011, found only five owning smartphones. This suggests a ownership rate of 4%, similar to the above forecast.
iPhone drives Japan smartphone penetration to over 20% (2010-09-09) observed that
smartphone penetration jumped to 22.6% in July from 12% a year ago, according to market research company BCN.
Tae Matsumoto did another survey in Nara Women's University on 2011-04-30 with 300 students participating, and found the ownership number jumped from the 4% of two months ago to 13%.

To this, I have two comments:

Ma stated on 2011-02-10, without justification, that the smartphone penetration rate in Taiwan was expected to reach nearly 50% this year. Less than a month ago, in Taiwan smartphone penetration set to hit record high: IDC, an IDC senior analyst said
Smartphone shipments in Taiwan, which accounted for between 21 percent and 22 percent of total mobile phone shipments last year, will increase to between 29 percent and 30 percent this year
That implied that smartphone ownership is less than 30%. Ma should tell us why his number 50% is so at odds with IDC's number, and completely out of line with any other prevailing forecasts.
All the numbers we quoted are about smartphone ownership and market penetration, not about usage. Ownership and market penetration are different from usage. For example, many Taiwanese own iPhones, but they use them as expensive cell phones to feel good, to show off, or to make a statement about their social status. Few understands how a smartphone differs from dumb phones and few realizes that a smartphone is a powerful computer. It is a rare Taiwanese smartphone owner who knows how to tether or even what it means. I have even helped many to turn on their GPS. See Two things to do in 2011: Use smartphone and dump Microsoft for more. Taiwanese leave their smartphones' tremendous power untapped just as they leave their computers' tremendous power untapped. This is as if I own the empire state building, but decide to use just one room on the first floor, and nowhere else. Why? Because I don't want to learn to use other rooms.

I saw a very surprising 2011 survey result from Ms Tae Matsumoto of Nara Women's University (奈良女子大學), as follows:

Thus, less than four out of 100 (or one out of twenty five) Nara Women's University students have smartphones. Can the number be this low in a Japan university?

This 4% is in line with Global Smartphone Penetration by Region 2009-2014, but is a far cry from the 23% given in iPhone drives Japan smartphone penetration to over 20%.

For US numbers, see Pew research smartphone ownership. They are 35% overall and 52% for young adults:

Smartphone penetration has reached more than half (52%) of 18-to-29-year-old US adults, according to a July 2011 study from the Pew Research Center Internet & American Life Project. The study also reveals that 45% of 30-to-49-year-olds own smartphones, and this figure then drops by almost 50% to 24% among 50-to-64-year-olds. Overall, 35% of US adults own smartphones.

The US numbers pale when compared to Taiwan's, according to president Ma Ying-Jeou:

"The smartphone penetration rate in Taiwan is expected to reach nearly 50% this year based on a similar figure in Hong Kong, where smartphones have become very popular," Ma told reporters at a press conference.

For people unfamiliar with Ma Yin-Jeou, he is a man constantly making unsubstantiated statements such as this, and making promises he could not keep (think 6-3-3).

In Taiwan smartphone penetration set to hit record high: IDC, we read

Smartphone shipments in Taiwan, which accounted for between 21 percent and 22 percent of total mobile phone shipments last year, will increase to between 29 percent and 30 percent this year, higher than the global average of 26 percent, IDC senior analyst Joey Yen (嚴蘭欣) told reporters at a news conference.

Serious problems with Facebook

Unlike Google, Facebook's contribution to human knowledge and useful dialog seems to me negligible.

First, you can like someone's post, ignore it, but never dislike it. This has the effect of distorting reality, and strongly discouraging those dissenting individuals from participating.

We can reference a blog entry and its comments, or a web page trivially using their URLs. In contrast, it is not obvious how to reference a Facebook comment. We can conclude that Facebook comments have little reference values. For example, researchers using Zotero to collect references will find few if any Facebook comments in their collections.

I left a comment, encouraging event supporters to provide evidences to garner more support. My comment was removed within minutes.

At this writing, there are 466 event participants in this Facebook public event named 連署要求NCC對《三立》假新聞開罰，勿再縱容惡質媒體!!. I asked these people to explain why Dr. Jerome Keating was wrong by having a different opinion at Taiwan, the Ma Government Wants the Media to Serve it. My question was deleted within minutes.

Overall, Facebook is transient and provides little of lasting values.

Many things in the following 自由時報 news story are remarkable:

The identity of all players in this drama are masked, such as 王姓乩童, 一間神壇, 楊姓被害人. There is no reason to believe that this absurd story actually happened. It could very well be a creative writing.
What's 神壇? It is a Mom-and-Pop temple. Mom and pop used to open a noodle shop that made them work like slaves. Now they could opt to open a low cost and low-maintenance home-temple. In my estimate, there is one mom-and-pop temple in every two city blocks, making it slightly less convenient than looking for a 7-Eleven.
I am not sure who is the worse fool: a Taiwanese who believes that 媽祖能教電腦, or a Taiwanese who supports Chinese KMT/CCP; the former hurts just himself, the latter hurts 2,300,000 Taiwanese.

When Lupangster created his Facebook account, he relied solely on his gmail account. His gmail account is effectively his Facewbook ID. Thus, his gmail account definitely proves his Facebook account ownership. Faye at info+rzcifs@support.facebook.com communicated with Lupangster using lupangster's gmail account, but Faye says she 無法核實帳號的擁有權. What else can Faye use to confirm lupangster@gmail.com owns lupangster@facebook.com?

Be reminded that Lupangster started communicating with Faye at info+rzcifs@support.facebook.com because his Facebook account was disabled. Nothing Faye at info+rzcifs@support.facebook.com
wrote addressed this issue. She did not offer an explanation why the account was disabled, or what she intended to do if she could be satisfied.

To summarize: Lupangster has only one email account, his gmail account. He used this gmail account to create a Facebook account, so his gmail account is his Facebook account ID. Facebook disabled his account without telling him why. After Lupangster complained, Faye at info+rzcifs@support.facebook.com started asking Lupangster to prove his identity and communicated with Lupangstger using Lupangster's gmail address. Faye even asked Lupangster for copy of his ID card. Why not ask Lupangster for his driving records, drinking habit, medical records or college transcript? And how would any of these things prove or disprove that lupangster@gmail.com owns lupangster@facebook.com?

Why is Facebook so popular? My theory is that it makes people happy.

When you post on Facebook, only your friends can comment. Friends are more inclined to write kinder and gentler comments than critical or hostile ones. To fix the idea, imagine a fictitious Facebook user Ma. Ma's enemies are unlikely to become his Facebook friends, and as a result, cannot make critical or hostile comments on Ma's posts. Consequently, Ma reads the favorable comments from his friends and is a very happy man. The happier Ma is, the more he likes Facebook. This is known as preaching to the choir.

Not only are Facebook people protected from enemies, their friends are only allowed to like a post, never dislike it.

Why?

There are likely free versions that do better jobs than Microsoft software.
A smartphone is a powerful computer that fits snugly in your palm and does so much. The reason that a person is not using it is likely ignorance. Here is a short list of things it can do.

It takes pictures as good as your point-and-shoot. It is easy to publish these pictures to the web or email them. If you upload them to sites such as Picasaweb, you can choose to have them displayed with the google maps of their locations. See One more reason to leave your point-and-shoot at home: geotagging.
Use it as an alarm clock that plays Bach's Cello concerto or Beatles to wake you up. You should be ashamed if you pack an alarm clock when you travel.
Use it as a countdown timer to make tea. My morning ritual is to let the tea leaves soak in boiled water for three minutes using my phone.
Use it as a stopwatch to time your walk, run or bike ride.
As you bike, use the phone's GPS to prevent from getting lost.
When you travel to a new city or a foreign country, use the GPS to learn about your new environment super fast. Paper map should be a thing of the past.
When you travel to Singapore, for a meager SGD$18, you can get a Singtel sim card for 72-hour unlimited Internet access. Using Internet tethering, your Notebook can access the Internet as well. See below for more about tethering.
If you take Taichung city buses, your phone's browser can show you when your bus comes to a bus stop. Without a smartphone, you might be waiting for a bus in the blind for an hour, under 100 degree hot sun, or in merciless icy-cold wind storm.
At a glance to know the weather of the day, or week, of the town you are currently in.
In a store, use your phone to scan a bar-code just like the casher, to find information or do comparison shopping.
If you still wear a watch, lose some weight by leaving it at home.

I end this short list with personal tethering stories.

Watching 大話新聞 on my MacBook Pro (via an iPhone 3GS) when I was on a bus from 桃園機場 to Taichung.
To work on my Notebook when I am too far away from any usable Wi-Fi.
Use tethering to connect my Notebook to the Internet while lecturing, when campus network is erratic.

My Mom is currently in a rehab center to get her strength back after a minor stroke. According to my brother, the rehab center does not have Wi-Fi. Every morning, my brother uses Internet tethering to skype Dad at home. My Mom and Dad would chat and sing for about an hour over Skype. What would Mom and Dad do without smartphone?

One thing I rarely do with my iPhone or Android is to call people as if it is a phone.

I heard so much accusation that Facebook was collaborating with Chinese KMT to silence Taiwanese that I wrote 瞼書找台灣人麻煩嗎? Is Facebook giving Taiwanese trouble?

I hoped to use it to collect evidences of such alleged atrocities. Thus far, only three people stepped forward to leave comments. This is my second call for help. Anyone can help in the following ways

If you read accounts of such persecution, please leave a comment including references

One more reason to leave your point-and-shoot at home: geotagging

Read this New York Times article that hinted at the demise of point-and-shoots: In Smartphone Era, Point-and-Shoots Stay Home.

I want to add one more reason: geotagging. Smartphones can write the coordinates, latitude and longitude, of a photo to the picture file. When these pictures are uploaded to sites such as http://picasaweb.google.com, you can choose to have a google map automatically showing the location of the picture.

See http://picasaweb.google.com/lubyliao/TaichungScenery# for an example. These pictures were taken with a HTC Desire HD android. I uploaded the pictures to Picasaweb, and Google maps are shown without any work on my part.

In contrast, the pictures at http://picasaweb.google.com/lubyliao/zcgniG# were taken with a point-and-shoot that carried no geo info. We can manually add geotags as I did here. But it is extra work that discourages me from using my point-and-shoot.

show some interesting features of the HTC Desire HD camera app. Note that IMAG0184.jpg has geo info, but IMAG0185.jpg doesn't. Likewise, IMAG0179.jpg does and IMAG0180.jpg doesn't. In between shots, I did not change camera setting to turn off geotagging. So who did?

Even more serious is the fact that the geo info for IMAG0178.jpg is completely wrong. IMAG0125.jpg and IMAG0144.jpg have distinct geotags even though they are the same place.

Thoughts on the September 2010 Amsterdam WASET multi-conferences

I was worried about the real existence of this Waset conference. All web searches for Waset was positive at this moment, but, like you, I had many questions. For example, why didn't they accept credit card payment ...
The conference included many different symposiums. I am in industrial engineering and systems management. All talks were entirely in one room. My presentation was at 9:00 AM. There are at least 20 papers to be presented in a 2 hour slot... and all the topics were different.

劉曉波作為一個作家，曾經為傳播民主知識寫過文章，也撰文抨擊過中共侵犯人權的行為。對這些，我們一直是尊重和肯定的。但是，進步作家是一回事，獲諾獎是另一回事，不是每一個進步作家都可以拿諾貝爾獎，他的貢獻和獲諾貝爾獎相差太遠。何況，他還是一個品格和道德有著嚴重缺陷的人，中國怎麼能讓一個道德上有嚴重問題的人當舉旗人？
1989年“六.四”事件發生後，天安門廣場血跡未幹，劉曉波就匆匆忙忙為中共屠殺背書，聲稱天安門廣場沒有死人。這之後，劉又在他的文章中說：“六四”提供了一個以謊言來撈稻草、自我貼金的良好時機。“各種人，懷著不同的動機，說著各異的謊言......。政治性謊言、道德性謊言、求生性謊言、官方謊言、精英謊言、民間謊言......,‘六四’被謊言打扮得一塌糊塗，也被謊言強姦得人老珠黃。”這其中雖然也說了“官方的謊言”，但無疑重點是在說“六.四”受難者製造謊言。
一些人在讀了劉介紹“六.四”的《末日倖存者的獨白》一書後，“感到的不是心理痛苦，而是生理痛苦：胃受不了，要嘔吐。”（見鄭義《這算什麼懺悔》）
把諾獎給劉曉波，就等於承認劉說的是對的，在中國不存在所謂的“六.四”鎮壓，“六.四”受難者在集體造謊。
近些年來，中國因言論和信仰被判入獄的政治犯成千上萬，這些人中的知名人士幾乎都表示他們曾遭受過中國員警的虐待，只有劉表示在監獄受到柔性化的管理，在押人員提享受到了人性化的生活環境，感到溫暖。
把諾獎給劉曉波，那就是在承認劉說的是對的，中國的所有政治犯都在詆毀中國已經進步了的監獄管理。
在諾獎揭曉前夕，有數百人簽名的《呼籲頒諾貝爾和平獎給劉曉波》的公開信送交諾委會，事後經人揭發，此信很多人在不知情的情況下被別人代簽，這種不公正的行為已經在網路上成了人們傳播的醜聞。
把諾獎給劉曉波，就竺於承認這種不公正的簽名行為是值得信任的。
2005年底，良心律師高智晟律師站在人類道德高度上為法輪功群體呼籲，發起了全球接力絕食維權抗暴運動，此時，劉一夥卻不斷地干擾破壞高的這個正義行動；2006年在美國總統布希接見中國維權人士時，劉一夥卻製造了讓人感到不可思議的“余王排郭事件”；2007年中國維權英雄楊春林先生與3000多農民、上海700多上海訪民發出“不要奧運要人權”的急切呼籲，劉等急切出來打橫炮，發出了所謂“要人權‘更要’奧運”。在近幾年的中國人維權活動中，人們都可以看到劉干擾破壞的身影。
把諾獎給劉曉波，就等於宣佈高智晟、胡佳、陳光誠、高耀潔等都不具有獲得諾獎的資格，打壓中國正當的維權活動，而支援同北京和作的所謂溫和派的改良活動。
劉曉波是一個首先上倍受爭議的人物，作家鄭義說劉“從來鄙視民眾”，“有意與尼采媲美”，並且是一種“毫無理論品質的鄙俗與淺薄”的鄙視。劉還是爭名奪利之徒，鄭義形容說：“八九年春夏之交的劉曉波，每一動作甚至每一眼神都充滿了對名利權勢的渴求。”劉對高智晟等人的打壓，在很大程度上也是由於他的爭名奪利的心所驅使。
《08憲章》是何人起草？到現在也還不太清楚，但無論是誰起草，有一點是肯定的：不是由劉曉波起草。當時我看到《08憲章》的時候，感到很奇怪，因為這個憲章同劉的一慣思想主張一點也不一樣。
幾年前，劉曾寫過一篇《從俞可平、吳思、劉軍甯看普及民主》的文章，劉說：“俞文對民主的理解與目前大陸自由知識界的理解，基本上沒有區別。俞文所講的民主常識，不僅早已成為民間自由主義者的共識，也早已成為黨內開明派的共識。”
看過俞可平《民主是個好東西》這篇文章的人都知道，俞的這篇文章是講“社會主義民主”的，曾經在國內包括新華社在內的多家大型媒體上刊載。這篇文章中沒有自由、人權、三權分立等民主社會最基本的東西，可是劉卻認為“俞文對民主的理解與目前大陸自由知識界的理解，基本上沒有區別。”其實這個思想才是劉真正的思想，由此我們可以斷定《08憲章》不是由劉起草。
諾獎評委會在很多事情都沒有基本搞清的情況下草草把諾獎給了劉曉波，這其中肯定有不為外人所知的內幕。
諾獎送給劉必然會對中國民主事業造成極大的破壞，中國的民主事業必然會因此分列成眾多的派別，相互之間的爭訌在所難免。在以後的日子裏，中共所布的這個棋子可能會找一個藉口放出來，分列民主陣營的隊伍，利用其掌控的資源破壞中國的民主事業，這也可能正是諾獎評委會所要達到的目的。
在此，希望真正有志於中國民主化的仁人志士、受苦受難的中國國內民眾、海內外一切良心尚存的組織和個人，以及西方關注中國人權的中國底層人的外國朋友行動起來，揭出諾貝爾獎評委會的黑幕。
在漫長的歲月裏，中國有緣獲諾獎的人寥寥無幾，正因為如此，中國人普遍把諾獎看得很神聖，他給中國造成的影響不可低估。
中國底層人士在漫漫的黑夜中艱難行進，之所以一線希望尚存，就是因為世界上還有占絕大多數的國家是自由、民主的國家。人們希望他們關注中國人權，希望他們能對中國產生影響促進中國的民主化。諾獎評委會將和平獎送給劉曉波這樣的人，無異於對中國苦難民眾冷水澆頭，是一種助紂為虐的行為。
我相信，中國人有能力揭穿諾獎的評選黑幕，如果中國人不能做到這一點，那中國的民主化到底還有希望嗎？

綠營政治人物臉書帳號紛傳出被停用！

(巳知受害者: 陳致中、謝長廷、賴清德、游錫堃)

日前李登輝前總統也跟上年輕人的腳步，開始玩起網路社群工具Facebook(臉書)，但說來也奇怪，最近綠營政治人物的Facebook帳號卻紛紛因為不明原因而遭到停用。目前已經傳出謝長廷、游錫堃、賴清德、陳致中等人的帳號因遭檢舉，而被停用，但向Facebook投訴後，也都沒有得到回應。

今年六月份時高雄市議員參選人陳致中因為遭到「冒牌陳致中檢舉正牌陳致中」，導致臉書帳號被無法使用，還大費周章地向網友解釋帳號遭盜用。

而在父親節當天，有網友反應無法在Facebook上搜尋到前行政院院長謝長廷的帳號，經了解之後，證實謝長廷本人的臉書帳號確實被停用，連同一帳號管理的謝長廷臉書粉絲專頁也不見了。

正當網友們懷疑是否這一切都是「阿共仔的陰謀」的時候，大台南市長參選人賴清德的臉書粉絲專頁竟也因為不明原因停用，競選總部只好在第一時間宣布，另外成立新的臉書粉絲專頁，號召網友重新加入。

不過農曆七月發生的怪事不只這一樁，今(25)日上午前行政院院長游錫堃也在噗浪上發難：「為什麼Facebook停用那麼久？已經三天了！信也寫了！毫無回應？不知有誰能夠幫助我？」，原來臉書帳號被停用的綠營苦主又多了一位，還有網友忿忿不平地說：「現在是逼著大家用中國的微博嗎？」

民進黨中央網路部主任林閣雍表示，去年民進黨的所設立的Facebook個人帳號Dpponline也因不明原因被幹掉。他建議可以先寫信向臉書抗議，再成立新粉絲專頁同步處理，而新設立的新粉絲專頁，可以多設幾位管理員，以防止因個別帳號停用，造成粉絲專頁也停用的情況發生。

這些遭到停用的綠營政治人物，賴清德已經再成立新的粉絲專頁，而陳致中也在臉書成立了「陳致中後援會」，但現在只有261人加入；游錫堃則考慮另外在 Facebook成立粉絲專頁，取代原先的個人帳號；而謝長廷目前則暫時以噗浪(Plurk)經營為主，保持和網友們的互動。

（中央社記者謝佳珍台北9日電）台灣控告國際標準組織（ISO）侵害姓名權，外交部今晚表示，雖然瑞士聯邦法院以無管轄權為由不受理，但外交部仍將繼續努力，以維護台灣合法權益。

外交部發布新聞稿表示，瑞士聯邦法院於台北時間9日晚間針對台灣控告國際標準組織（ISO）的民事案件作成判決，5名承審法官再次肯定台灣有權作為訴訟當事人之一造，符合國家要件，具有國際法人地位及訴訟當事人能力。
外交部說，瑞士聯邦法院另以外交承認與否的政治考量，而作出本案無管轄權的不受理判決，認為台灣所提出的民事訴訟具有政治目的，致使台灣訴求有關民法上的姓名權保護未被受理。
外交部表示，本案因ISO對台灣的不當稱呼，經外交部及相關駐外館處一再與ISO交涉未果，才循瑞士民事司法途徑尋求救濟。
外交部指出，這次案件為民事訴訟案件，並無所謂政治意圖。雖因瑞士聯邦法院以無管轄權為由不受理，但外交部仍將繼續努力，以維護台灣的合法權益。
總部設在日內瓦的非政府組織ISO 在它所訂定的「ISO 3166」國名與地區編碼表中，將台灣稱為「中國台灣省」，廣為國際沿用。台灣於民國96年7月20日在日內瓦提起訴訟，要求正名為「中華民國（台灣）」。

Thoughts on the August 2010 Singapore WASET multi-conferences

On 2010-02-11, I submitted a paper Some questionable web construction approaches and practice to WASET August 2010 International Conference on Internet and Web Engineering. This conference is one of some ten conferences of the WASET multi-conferences held at the River View Hotel, Singapore, from August 25 to August 27. I could no longer find the list of the conferences for this WASET multi-conferences, but it is similar to the 2011 International Conference on Information, Communication, Electrical & Computer Engineering in Singapore that consists of eleven conferences.

I discovered WASET conferences from Google search. They looked impressive. I submitted the paper to WASET's August Singapore conference because during the summer months I will be in Taiwan, an easy four hour flight to Singapore.

Before I went to the Singapore meeting, I wrote about WASET in I will be presenting a paper Some questionable web construction approaches and practice at WASET Singapore 2010.

On 2010-08-25, I checked in at the WASET registration desk in the River View Hotel, Singapore. I was given a lunch voucher, my name tag, a receipt of registration fee, with my name and 600 [sic] handwritten, a copy of the conference proceeding (WASET year 6 issue 69 August 2010), and a conference CD. I read my paper starting around 4:15 PM. Even though my talk was well received, it was unclear anyone was interested in the topic.

Some thoughts on WASET's conference:

Paying for WASET conference registration feels more like paying for ransom than paying for a conference. Wiring 450€ to an unknown account in Dubai, UAE to register for WASET conference is a good source of anxiety for many and will make others think twice about registering. I was relieved to see that there was really a WASET conference in the River View Hotel, Singapore. I advise WASET to accept credit card payment like everyone else.
WASET must answer authors' messages instead of ignoring them. Read I will be presenting a paper Some questionable web construction approaches and practice at WASET Singapore 2010 to see how they ignored my messages to them.
The following private correspondence from IIT Roorkee, India, suggests a general pattern:

... then I wrote this things to alerts@waset.org. But they did not respond. Finally I send my paper as attachment to alerts@waset.org. But still they didn't respond. ...
I wish WASET great success in bringing conferences to such cities as Amsterdam, Paris, Venice, Rome, Tokyo, Singapore as advertised in http://www.waset.org. This would offer scholars more conferences to choose from, a wonderful contribution. Judging from my experience with the Singapore conferences, WASET has much work to do to make its conferences useful. I see the following serious problems:

The WASET Singapore multi-conference program lists 257 papers in 11 conferences with an average of 23 papers per conference. Out of 257, 44 are posters listed in the e-Sessions (page 11 of the PDF program). There are two parallel sessions in Halls A and B. The posters are supposed to be in Halls A and B during all three days, but I did not see any in Hall A. I hope other attendees can share their experience by leaving comments. Excluding posters, each conference has an average of 19 papers. The audience is small, around 30, in the afternoon of 2010-08-25 in Hall A. That is on average less than three attendees per conference. With this small number of attendees, the likelihood is small that one will meet people in one's field, or potential collaborators.
One way to get a sense whether a conference offers good value is to see how many papers are of interest. I invite you to read the conference program to decide. Leave a comment as a service to others.
There were no free Internet connection in the conference halls. I borrowed a hotel Wi-Fi account from a WASET lady staff immediately before my talk. It worked when I began, but soon started asking for a password.
Each talk is 20 minutes. Yet in session III (see picture below) which went from 3 to 5 PM, there were fourteen talks scheduled, arithmetically could take up a total of nearly four hours. How can this impossibility be achieved?
The conference program lists 257 papers, the conference CD contains 245, but the hard copy conference proceeding contains only 25. Why are 232 papers excluded from the proceeding? What is the criterion for a paper to be included in the proceeding?
I had the misfortune of having a 100 % failure rate interacting with WASET's web (PHP) programs while submitting my paper and while submitting registration. WASET must fix these web programs right away.
Conference programs should not be published as PDF files as they shape up. Such practice is ineffective and does not engender professional respect.
WASET papers are published to the web at http://www.waset.org/journals/waset. As of today, 2010-09-05, the most recently published papers are those from the April 2010 conferences at http://www.waset.org/journals/waset/v64.php. Only 8 such papers are visible with the rest labeled under construction. Assuming WASET had published 2010 April conference CD, it should be little or no work to also have these papers published to the web. Likewise, there is no excuse not to publish August 2010 conference CD to the web site immediately. Not publishing papers timely, WASET hurts its credibility and authors' visibility.

If WASET can improve to offer genuinely useful conferences, I will not hesitate to attend its other conferences in exciting cities such as Paris, Tokyo and Rome. I wish it success.

Microsoft and I

I use very little Microsoft software. For the last four years, my main machine is a MacBook Pro that only very occasionally runs Windows XP on a VMWare virtual machine. Before that, my main machine was a Dell notebook that ran Redhat Linux most of the time, and only very rarely did it boot into MS Windows for special needs such as when I was traveling in Mexico. Most of my life, I do not need Microsoft software.

I advise people to stay away from Microsoft. Here is why:

Microsoft Windows purposely leave out or play down the most powerful and most important software, viz a terminal program that lets you control your machine and other servers. The terminal program that Microsoft operating systems offer used to be called MS-DOS, and is now called cmd. The MS terminal program does not include a most important suite of programs that allow your PC to communicate with other machines. I am talking about programs such as ssh, scp and sftp. To illustrate, a straightforward way to transfer files between a PC and an iPhone would be to use scp. True, one can install cygwin to turn a Windows PC into a Unix machine. Or, one can install a ssh client such as PuTTY. But this begs the question as to why Microsoft chooses not to give users the most fundamentally powerful terminal program, out of box.
My guess is that Microsoft believes most users do not need a powerful terminal program. Instead, they need a word processor such as Word, a spreadsheet program such as Excel, a personal data manager such as Access, and a presentation tool such as PowerPoint. I agree these programs can be useful. But I find no use for Word except when a paper I publish needs to conform to the style set in a Word template. PowerPoint has been faulted to divert people's attention from essence to trivial and flashy presentation tidbits. See US military: We Have Met the Enemy and He Is PowerPoint. I do not ever use PowerPoint even though I give many talks. My slides are always themselves web pages such as those generated by a Google Docs presentation (Here is an example). I do not use Access unless a client makes me. For relational DBMS, my favorite is Postgresql. I use Excel for very simple jobs.
Microsoft software has caused a lot of grief for the world. This bullet addresses the problem caused by its client-side computing model. This means, Microsoft's programs such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access save user data to the user's PC, instead of a server machine such as in the case of a Google doc. Many years ago, my teaching assistants would keep the students work record in an Excel spreadsheet. When I ask for it, they would email me the spreadsheet file. I would be helpless if my TA was not responding to my requests for the Excel file, or worse if my TA had taken off vacationing in the Himalayas, thinking she had sent me the file which never arrived. Clearly, client-side based computing makes information sharing and collaboration difficult and problematic. Nowadays, my TAs and I share class grades using Google spreadsheets. I collaborate with coauthors using Google docs. Microsoft offers similar service in its software SharePoint. Since I do not use Microsoft software, I have not found any use of it. Finally, I like to mention Evernote, which as a note taking software saves user data to both the user's PC and Evernote's servers, all transparently.
Consider the afore-mentioned problems of Microsoft software, you might think people will have second thoughts about Microsoft. Here is the frightening fact that boggles the mind: Microsoft owns Taiwan

ISO is absurd and immoralwhen it calls Taiwan a province of China

ISO (International Organization for Standardization) calls Taiwan a province of China in ISO 3166. See English country names and code elements.

I consider this alone a crime against humanity, as bad as Hitler or worse (most certainly from Taiwanese point of view):

What gives ISO the right to claim Taiwan a part of China against all historical facts and political realities?
If Taiwan were a province of China, then it is not a country. Why then does ISO list it as a country?
If Taiwan were a province of Taiwan, why do people obtain visa from Taiwan, NOT China, to go to Taiwan? When in Taiwan, why do they use Taiwan dollars and NOT RMB?

All I ask from ISO folks is FAIRNESS! Whatever country you are from, do you appreciate this:

Yo, Swiss, you are from a province of china.

We Taiwanese resent ISO for its extreme insensitivity towards 23,000,000 Taiwanese.

Many of the 23,000,000 Taiwanese are devastated by this ISO 3166 madness that calls Taiwan a province of China, but they don't understand how extremely damaging ISO 3166 is.

A consequence of ISO 3166 is that tons of software have been written based on this standard. As a result, ISO helps spreading the Chinese lie Taiwan is a province of China like wildfire.

With ISO 3166, ISO has made many angry Taiwanese write to companies asking them to stop calling Taiwan a province of China. Most of these Taiwanese do not understand that the real culprit is ISO. Otherwise they would have condemned ISO, instead of writing to companies that are simply using software based on ISO 3166.

To clarify, I hereby show a response of a letter I wrote Moodle protesting its web site listing Taiwan as a province of China:

WASET's management is a huge problem. WASET may have some good ideas, but their web sites and management styles are ineffective and easily raise suspicions about their competence and credibility. Some examples:
Registration should be done online with a credit card. The current practice of requiring wiring money must be abolished.
Final conference program should not be published as a PDF file. Such practice is ineffective and does not engender professional respect.

I searched Google for WASET Singapore 2010 and could scarcely find any information. If WASET is not promoting the conference in which I am presenting a paper, then I feel I should. Thus, this update.

I decided to bring this entry back online after I received inquiries about it. Many people are as anxious and curious about WASET as I.

I too hope WASET offers genuinely useful conferences for scholarly presentation and publication. If I go to WASET August 2010 Singapore multi-conferences, I promise the world an update.]

After a paper I submitted to the August 2010 WASET (World Academy of Science, Engineering and Technology) conference in Singapore was accepted for presentation and publication, I began to suspect that WASET is a fraud. To my surprise, before mid-June 2010, repeated google searches for waset resulted in no negative comments against WASET, save for one web site I could not take seriously. I will explain later why I suspected WASET a fraud.

I decided not to pay the $450 Euros registration fee until I received an email from alerts@waset.org, stating

I was not impressed with the conference program. But it changed my mind about not registering because it appeared to show some real people presenting papers. I am a University of San Diego professor. I submitted a paper to WASET August 2010 Singapore conference because I will be in Asia at that time. I had invested a significant amount of time with WASET after I made a decision to submit paper to it, and made my paper conform to its required layout, format and style. If I had made a mistake, let me bite the bullet.

As a prerequisite to register online, I needed to wire 450 Euros to an account in Dubai, United Arab Emirate. This felt more like paying a ransom than paying for a conference. Why couldn't WASET accept a credit card, like anyone else? Worse, my bank charged me $35 for the international wiring.

Interesting, yet most unpleasant things began to happen after I wired the 450 Euros. Here is a summary

registration for the conference at http://www.waset.org/author.php failed using whatever browser and whatever file format the registration page instructs.
To date, I sent more than fifteen requests to WASET for help. They ignored most of them. When they did respond, they wanted me to try http://www.waset.org/author.php again and again.

One response was promising.

Finally, I wrote B. Brojack, Secretariat of WASET, for either straightening out my registration impasse, or else refunding my 450 Euros. No response!

To summarize, I wired 450 Euros to an account in Dubai, UAE to pay for the registration fee for a WASET conference in Singapore. I was instructed to register for the conference online at http://www.waset.org/author.php, which always failed. I wrote WASET to request for help. They ignored me. I asked for refund, they also ignored.

In the last post, I mentioned that my Google site [I Love Taiwan] Google Group stopped working for about a month now. Repeated requests to Google Inc for help produced no useful response. A friend asked:

Nope. I am confident the site became inaccessible not because of the content of the site, or anything I have done.
For the near term, I think you need to come up with a good, clear, concise explanation of what happened leading up to the suspension of service, and why Google might have suspended your account. Then explain why Google was wrong to do what they did. Finally, you should lay into Google for being unresponsive and stonewalling, in apparent violation of their prime directive not be be evil.
Nothing I can think of can justify disability of my Google site; it just happened out of the blue. Google is not suspending my account. In fact, all of my Google apps continue to work perfectly except my existing Google sites. A far-fetched speculation is that China made Google Inc disable my site because one of its subsite is Taiwan is not a part of China. If this is true, then Google Inc is helping China silence people and the whole world should be prepared to fight not just China, but also Google Inc.
Consider an even more serious disruption of Google service, and even more serious loss of years of historical data for Taiwan. Here is an example. For more then three weeks now, my Google Sites have become disabled while all other Google Apps continue to work. I wrote many times to ask for assistance, getting no useful response, and the Sites continues to be disabled.

〔本報訊〕馬總統到底有沒有苦民所苦？還是認為眼不見為淨呢？苗栗縣先前發生的的大埔農地徵收事件，就有網友寄e-mail向馬政府陳情，當中附上一段 youtube的陳情相關網址，但府方看到後居然回信表示，為防止駭客入侵或擔憂電腦中毒，因此無法連結不明網站。許多網友知道後，直呼太誇張！

這段youtube影片內容是，政府為了徵收大埔農地將怪手無情的開入並毀壞農田的影片。有網友將這段影片上傳至youtube，並將網址寄給府方，希望馬總統能看到也能夠正視這個問題。

而府方收到後回信表示，由於網路病毒與駭客惡意攻擊層出不窮，為了維護總統府工務電腦的安全，故無法連結至提供網站。

總統府發言人羅智強表示，從民進黨執政時期開始，基於治安考量，總統府所受理的信件，原則上不擷取所附之連結，若民眾有意見，總統府會再與相關人士做進一步研究。

有網友們聽到後直呼這真是太扯了，因為不止總統府網站本身在youtube就有連結，youtube也是全球最大的影音分享平台，怎麼會是來路不明的網站呢？有網友直接表示說，現在全球的政府紛紛與社群網站接軌，馬政府不想看就算了，怎麼可以說網站有毒呢？雖然府方事後回應，即便是知名網站，都有資訊安全的疑慮，但不排除未來以更彈性的處理方式。但馬政府面對民眾陳情的處理態度，不免令人質疑是不是謹慎過了頭呢？

A PowerPoint diagram meant to portray the complexity of American strategy in Afghanistan certainly succeeded in that aim.

WASHINGTON — Gen. Stanley A. McChrystal, the leader of American and NATO forces in Afghanistan, was shown a PowerPoint slide in Kabul last summer that was meant to portray the complexity of American military strategy, but looked more like a bowl of spaghetti.

“When we understand that slide, we’ll have won the war,” General McChrystal dryly remarked, one of his advisers recalled, as the room erupted in laughter.

The slide has since bounced around the Internet as an example of a military tool that has spun out of control. Like an insurgency, PowerPoint has crept into the daily lives of military commanders and reached the level of near obsession. The amount of time expended on PowerPoint, the Microsoft presentation program of computer-generated charts, graphs and bullet points, has made it a running joke in the Pentagon and in Iraq and Afghanistan.

“PowerPoint makes us stupid,” Gen. James N. Mattis of the Marine Corps, the Joint Forces commander, said this month at a military conference in North Carolina. (He spoke without PowerPoint.) Brig. Gen. H. R. McMaster, who banned PowerPoint presentations when he led the successful effort to secure the northern Iraqi city of Tal Afar in 2005, followed up at the same conference by likening PowerPoint to an internal threat.

“It’s dangerous because it can create the illusion of understanding and the illusion of control,” General McMaster said in a telephone interview afterward. “Some problems in the world are not bullet-izable.”

In General McMaster’s view, PowerPoint’s worst offense is not a chart like the spaghetti graphic, which was first uncovered by NBC’s Richard Engel, but rigid lists of bullet points (in, say, a presentation on a conflict’s causes) that take no account of interconnected political, economic and ethnic forces. “If you divorce war from all of that, it becomes a targeting exercise,” General McMaster said.

Commanders say that behind all the PowerPoint jokes are serious concerns that the program stifles discussion, critical thinking and thoughtful decision-making. Not least, it ties up junior officers — referred to as PowerPoint Rangers — in the daily preparation of slides, be it for a Joint Staff meeting in Washington or for a platoon leader’s pre-mission combat briefing in a remote pocket of Afghanistan.

Last year when a military Web site, Company Command, asked an Army platoon leader in Iraq, Lt. Sam Nuxoll, how he spent most of his time, he responded, “Making PowerPoint slides.” When pressed, he said he was serious.

“I have to make a storyboard complete with digital pictures, diagrams and text summaries on just about anything that happens,” Lieutenant Nuxoll told the Web site. “Conduct a key leader engagement? Make a storyboard. Award a microgrant? Make a storyboard.”

Despite such tales, “death by PowerPoint,” the phrase used to described the numbing sensation that accompanies a 30-slide briefing, seems here to stay. The program, which first went on sale in 1987 and was acquired by Microsoft soon afterward, is deeply embedded in a military culture that has come to rely on PowerPoint’s hierarchical ordering of a confused world.

“There’s a lot of PowerPoint backlash, but I don’t see it going away anytime soon,” said Capt. Crispin Burke, an Army operations officer at Fort Drum, N.Y., who under the name Starbuck wrote an essay about PowerPoint on the Web site Small Wars Journal that cited Lieutenant Nuxoll’s comment.

In a daytime telephone conversation, he estimated that he spent an hour each day making PowerPoint slides. In an initial e-mail message responding to the request for an interview, he wrote, “I would be free tonight, but unfortunately, I work kind of late (sadly enough, making PPT slides).”

Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates reviews printed-out PowerPoint slides at his morning staff meeting, although he insists on getting them the night before so he can read ahead and cut back the briefing time.

Gen. David H. Petraeus, who oversees the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and says that sitting through some PowerPoint briefings is “just agony,” nonetheless likes the program for the display of maps and statistics showing trends. He has also conducted more than a few PowerPoint presentations himself.

General McChrystal gets two PowerPoint briefings in Kabul per day, plus three more during the week. General Mattis, despite his dim view of the program, said a third of his briefings are by PowerPoint.

Richard C. Holbrooke, the Obama administration’s special representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan, was given PowerPoint briefings during a trip to Afghanistan last summer at each of three stops — Kandahar, Mazar-i-Sharif and Bagram Air Base. At a fourth stop, Herat, the Italian forces there not only provided Mr. Holbrooke with a PowerPoint briefing, but accompanied it with swelling orchestral music.

President Obama was shown PowerPoint slides, mostly maps and charts, in the White House Situation Room during the Afghan strategy review last fall.

Commanders say that the slides impart less information than a five-page paper can hold, and that they relieve the briefer of the need to polish writing to convey an analytic, persuasive point. Imagine lawyers presenting arguments before the Supreme Court in slides instead of legal briefs.

Captain Burke’s essay in the Small Wars Journal also cited a widely read attack on PowerPoint in Armed Forces Journal last summer by Thomas X. Hammes, a retired Marine colonel, whose title, “Dumb-Dumb Bullets,” underscored criticism of fuzzy bullet points; “accelerate the introduction of new weapons,” for instance, does not actually say who should do so.

No one is suggesting that PowerPoint is to blame for mistakes in the current wars, but the program did become notorious during the prelude to the invasion of Iraq. As recounted in the book “Fiasco” by Thomas E. Ricks (Penguin Press, 2006), Lt. Gen. David D. McKiernan, who led the allied ground forces in the 2003 invasion of Iraq, grew frustrated when he could not get Gen. Tommy R. Franks, the commander at the time of American forces in the Persian Gulf region, to issue orders that stated explicitly how he wanted the invasion conducted, and why. Instead, General Franks just passed on to General McKiernan the vague PowerPoint slides that he had already shown to Donald H. Rumsfeld, the defense secretary at the time.

Senior officers say the program does come in handy when the goal is not imparting information, as in briefings for reporters.

The news media sessions often last 25 minutes, with 5 minutes left at the end for questions from anyone still awake. Those types of PowerPoint presentations, Dr. Hammes said, are known as “hypnotizing chickens.”

There are many good movie clips in youTube that I would really like to keep before it becomes unavailable. Do you know how to do it?

A google search on youtube download produced 470,000,000 results, some of which should be useful. One of my favorites was to use a bookmarklet, one click of which used to add a download link in the youTube's movie page I was watching. Unfortunately, this bookmarklet ceased to work when youTube renovated its web site just a couple of weeks ago.

I will offer two solutions that work as of today:

For Firefox users, install the following addon/extension
1-Click YouTube Video Download. Afterwards, when you watch a youTube movie, the page will have three links that allow you to download the movie in FLV MP4 or 3GP formats.
On a PC, download and install YouTube Downloader from http://www.youtubedownload.altervista.org/http://www.youtubedownload.altervista.org/. This stand-alone program asks you for a youTube page to download and is smart enough to get the page address as you do a copy [control-C] of the address.

I am unable to find an extension for Google Chrome that works, but I am sure it is a matter of time.

　「二二八事件」「霧社事件」「礁吧年事件」「「美麗島事件」等所有曾經發生在台灣的重大慘事，最重量級的用字都是僅以「事件」稱之；「五卅慘案」「廬溝橋事變」「文化大革命」「南京大屠殺」發生在中國大陸的不幸，卻都以特別嚴重的字眼命名。你注意到了這些差別嗎？

　「歷史名詞」在台灣教科書裡五十年來就一直存在著如此雙重標準的敘述，因為這是高級外省人由於國共戰亂落敗到台灣來，獨裁專制地操控台灣人要跟他們一樣仇視日本及中國共產黨。一九五○年代起，中國國民黨教育台灣民眾，要跟隨蔣政權一起反攻大陸，現在馬政權卻極盡所能傾向中國並朝國共終極統一目標前進。

　美國國家檔案期滿三十年，資料就可解密對外公開；中國國民黨黨史館至今仍封鎖一九四七年台灣二二八慘案的真正史料，且認為當年國府殺害無辜民眾的舉動是時空環境下的「必要之惡」，又極力褒揚黃彰健的論述說二二八僅六七三人死亡及國軍在當年三月八日登陸基隆港時，基隆港已淨空，不可能有民眾被射殺。教育部近日正重修歷史科九八課綱，學者憂心台灣史恐成為兩岸友好關係史，中國史倍增，世界史減半，將嚴重扭曲台灣高中生的史觀。

　自一九九八年陳列在台北二二八館的常設展將於今年三月底走入歷史，四月一日起閉館八個月重新更換展場資料，擬於二○一一年元月重新開館。清明祭祖掃墓是四月份裡民間重大的節日，當普羅大眾在緬懷祖先之際，會有幾許人「將心比心」想到仍然有多少二二八受難者遺屬至今還不知他們先人的遺體在何處呢？

　紀念國殤日二二八的同時，請仔細獨立思考與判斷……到底是誰在操控台灣歷史教育的詮釋權？敬請全民對該館改展前與後做誠摯面對歷史的客觀比較吧！

From your gmail screen, click on Settings, which is the third link from the right of the top line. Then click on Filters, which is the fourth link from the left on the top line. Follow the instructions to filter messages. I would recommend not only setting up filters to block undesired messages, but also to forward messages automatically to other accounts, etc.

I am overwhelmed by the number of messages of a google group, but does not want to unsubscribe from it because I find the group important to me. What can I do?

There are many options. For example, you can access the google group site and set your delivery option to one a day.

II. Punished by check company DELUXE Corp

I ordered new checks from my bank. But the new checks did not come after three weeks. Why? It turned out that the check company DELUXE Corp printed and mailed out new checks using my old address. The checks with wrong address were returned to DELUXE Corp while I waited for these checks. Everybody was a loser except perhaps the Postal service. All the suffering could have been avoided if the DELUXE Corp was smart enough to use my updated address from the bank.

Don't be conned into giving away your account information

I got this message in my Gmail INBOX today. You would think that Gmail would catch this phishing attack, but it did not! The link I was invited to click looks completely legit: http://www.gmail.com/account. As I clicked, I was invited to log in my Google acount. I submitted my username/password into this normal looking Gmail login screen, knowing that my username and password was being harvested. In two seconds, I tried to access this google account; but I could not, because the account's password had been changed. It took about ten seconds to reset the account password to reclaim the ownership of this account.

How did I know this was a phishing attack? Because the link address (URL) behind (don't click) http://www.gmail.com/account is http://gmail.serveuser.com:8080/accounts/google/accounts/ServiceLoging/service=mail/3A2F2F3Dhtml/gmail.php

So when I click the link, I am not viewing a google page, but a page from an outfit called serveuser.com.

If you already fell for this, immediately change your password to reclaim your account. Otherwise, the consequence can be serious.

Advice on Google Groups:

If you are a member of a Google Group, you should (read MUST) have a Google account. Your Google account will make your life much easier. It allows you (after log in)
- to read and search your Google group mail archives. Note that a corollary of this is that you do not need to store any of your group messages.
- to change your group status. For example, you can opt for one digest message a day when you are overwhelmed by the volume of the messages, or even to opt for no mail.

Computer literacy can save Taiwan

At this moment in human civilization, a people, such as 23,000,000 Taiwanese, have the power of making a statement that the world will hear right away. For example, they can sign an electronic statement that says

CCP and KMT keep on spreading a lie that Taiwan is part of china against historical facts. Taiwanese are not Chinese and do not want to be Chinese.

I now describe how to start with nothing in the morning, but collect 10,000,000 signatures by the end of the day.

Create an endorsement web page using one of the many free petition hosting sites or alternatives such as Google spreasheet
Email out request for endorsement
Get foot soldiers to go door-to-door, Si-Men-Ding, Department Stores, Bullet Trains Stations, ... with a notebook computer quipped with a 3G device for Internet access to gather signatures. This has the added benefit of connecting to voters in meaningful ways.

Will this work? It will if enough people want to make it happen.

This is extremely attractive because

it cost little money to carry out
it does not take a committee to approve or debate to no end. A person can start the project. Whether it succeeds in collecting enough signature is a reflection of people's will.
if you do not succeed, keep on trying until you do
remember that Taiwan is not democratic because KMT never allows people the birthrights of referendum. Electronic signing/voting is a low-cost way to tell KMT that we do not need its permission for referendum. Electronic voting is the next generation referendum. We are paving ways to a democratic country.

Alibi everywhere

Many of our daily activities are time-stamped and can become our permanent records if we wish.

Take web browsers or mailers for example. Each visit of a web page is recorded in the browser history file, complete with the title and URL (address) of the page, and date time of the visit. For emailing, every outgoing message carries with it the time the message is sent and a copy is usually stored in the Sent folder of the mailer.

Some people are afraid that such information might become incriminating, so they deliberately delete such records. For example, a kid who has spent a few hours using family computer visiting sites that parents do not approve may delete the browser history before parents come back from work.

Sometimes, such records can become useful alibi or evidences.

Here is a real example. I received a bill from a consultant, charging me for two hours of meeting time from 3 to 5 on 2009-02-20. I pointed out to the consultant that the meeting took less than an hour, but he insisted that two hours were correct. If there are no records to prove one way or the other, this would be his words against mine. There are many potentially useful records to look into, such as parking records for the meeting, shopping receipt at a Seven-Eleven on my way back from consultant's office, or charge receipt at a gas pump, etc. I found supporting evidence from my office Mac's Firefox browser history file. It showed that

at 2:43PM, I visited Mapquest for direction to the consultant's office, and
at 4:45 PM, I was using Gmail in my office

Since it takes at least 20 minutes to get back from his office to my office, I could not possibly be in his office after 4:25. This shows that the meeting could not possibly be two hours.

If you need such time records,

think about things you did that carried a time-stamp such as phone calls, visit to ATM machines, editing a file on your PC, etc.
Usually, the time records stored on a server that you cannot alter are more trusted than the records in your possession. For example, phone call records provided by the phone company or the access record on a web server that matches your browser history file should be accepted as trustworthy.

Wrong ways to collect petition signatures

Today, I got a petition signing request in an email message. The idea was simple: reply to the message and added my information to endorse. But this is such a bad way to do it:

Unless the person in charge of the operation is a good programmer, the received messages are likely to be processed manually to glean out the endorsers. This is extremely time-consuming and clearly not scalable.
If a person manually extracts endorser information from the email messages, then the person is not a sophisticated computer user. Consequently, the endorser data collected is unlikely to be stored in an intelligent fashion such as using a database. The result is that it is not easy to analyze the collected data, to glean information out of it and to generate reports, etc.

韋禎 and A-gu (阿牛) made contribution to humanity by publicizing KMT's crimes. In both cases, the crime data is simple text. Consequently, the data does not allow easy query (such as when did this occur? What is the reference URL? etc). Neither does it allow alternative way of presentation, short of a rewrite of the article. They can do better, without much more work, by using a database to store data.

To illustrate, please take a look at http://taiwan1st.net/t1/ma/ or http://taiwan1st.net/t1/achievement/. Under the hood, each story there is stored as a record of a database table. As a result, query and search are easy, and the data can be presented differently with simple programming.

Assume we now have a project hosted at http://taiwan1st.net to collect (in a database) Ma's atrocities. Each of 韋禎's original stories, 阿牛's translation of it, and other relevant information such as source, date, etc will be in one logical record for easy use.

I just talked (for more than an hour) to a powerful physicist friend returning to the states from Taiwan for the winter break. He could not stop talking about Chen Shui-Bian with fierce hatred while I tried hard to talk about other things, such as Ma Yean-Jeou. No use. He marched back to Chen Shui-Bian agian and again as if Chen Shui-Bian was the only thing he cared. All this time I wondered about KMT's unthinkable success in brainwashing Taiwanese:

What is the logic behind Taiwanese hating a potential thief (Chen) with passion, but letting Satan himself (Ma) off the hook?

In my attempt to not talk about Chen Shiu-Bian, I asked him about Freddy Lim. Who? He asked. I was amazed of his ignorance about Freddy.

I: Do you watch 大話新聞 (Freddy is occasionally a penalist)?
He: No, I don't have a TV set.

I don't have a TV set either. Furthermore, I live in the American Continent at least seven months out of a year. But I listen (using an iPod) to 大話新聞 and 頭家來開講 almost everyday when I drive and when I take a walk. I wrote a blog entry at 大話新聞/頭家來開講 describing how to do it. Here is a simple summary:

This is an email I sent out today.

It is critical that Taiwanese turn their emails into web pages, so that they change from internal to external and invisible to visible. Note:
We should not be preaching to the choirs and to just make ourselves happy. We should focus on changing those 7,659,014 people who voted for Ma and KMT.
Email, once turned into a web page has a permanent existence and available to anybody. I am not saying you should not email. You should publish it as web page, then email.
I may delete your email because I have no time to read now; I cannot delete your web page and I can read it anytime I want.
Google and other search engines cannot catalog your emails, but they will quickly catalog your web pages to make them easy to find.
Publishing web pages is no more difficult than emailing. You can even publish blogspot blogs by emailing. Let me know if you have questions about this.
If we do not publish to the web, Taiwanese' voice will be very feeble. To give you an example: if more Taiwanese had blogged on 李慶安, she would have been prosecuted earlier. The fact is, few Taiwanese had. As a result, when you googled for 李慶安, you used to get almost nothing. Another example: many of my blogs display a KMT fact box, like this:

〔記者楊久瑩、李靚慧、曾韋禎、施曉光╱台北報導〕在銀行一年期定存只剩不到一點五％的今天，最新統計資料卻顯示，國內享有十八％優惠存款利率的軍、公、教退休人員已達四十萬人，政府一年得補貼利息近八百億元，足以讓全國國中小學童吃免費營養午餐四年、或辦理五歲幼兒國教向下延伸五年，甚至夠政府再發一次消費券讓全民享用；值得注意的是，十八％已造成政府財政沉重負擔，積欠台銀的利息金額逾五百億元！

研擬公務人員優惠存款改革的銓敘部官員透露，軍公教退休人員十八％優惠存款已成為繼勞健保後，另一個政府單位沉重的負擔，部分財政困難的地方縣市的確多次反映編不出經費來，只能逐年編預算攤還欠款。

根據台灣銀行最新統計，目前十八％優惠存款總帳戶數為四十萬一千戶，總存款規模為四千三百零三億元。為了四千三百零三億元的存款，一個月必須支出六十四億元的利息，以去年十一月為例，台銀負擔十六億元，政府則負擔四十八億元利息，總計一年利息支出金額便高達七百六十八億元，預料今年隨著利率再降，政府貼補的利息總額將可能飆高到八百億，幾乎是政府一次消費券支出的總額。

根據台銀數據顯示，截至去年十一月底止，中央及地方政府積欠台灣銀行的十八％優惠存款利息，總金額已高達五百零六億元，其中中央政府積欠三十四億元、地方政府共欠四百七十二億元。

調降利率部份考委支持

針對十八％優惠政策，朝野立委則態度不一，民進黨立委陳啟昱認為，現在的利率這麼低，政府必須編列更高的預算維持十八％，結果政府卻沒錢補助勞工，怎麼都說不過去；立委黃淑英則批政府長期保障軍公教福利，卻不重視勞工權益。軍教恢復課稅，其配套措施是讓所課稅款回流至軍教上面，而非回歸全民；十八％改革的配套，也是由公務員獲利，不像勞工紓困，是用勞工自己的就業保險基金、勞保基金來支付，政府對待勞工與公務員的態度實在是天差地遠。

國民黨團副書記長呂學樟則表示，由於經濟不景氣導致利率調降，是階段性問題，未來利率仍有可能調漲，一個長遠的制度，不能因為階段性問題來做修改，基於信賴保護原則，目前軍公教十八％優惠利率制度還是應該維持，現在談此問題並不適宜。

歐將推美中台正和關係

【特派員張宗智華盛頓5日電】美國總統當選人歐巴瑪20日即將就任，華府1位兩岸問題專家5日撰文預測，歐巴瑪新政府將推動美、中、台的「正和」（positive-sum）關係，美國不會與北京合作，長保國民黨執政，因為這全都得由台灣人民決定。華府智庫戰略暨國際中心（CSIS）研究員葛來儀（Bonnie Glaser）在專文中並建議，由於馬英九總統已採取務實與和解的政策，歐巴瑪新政府可不再提「反對兩岸任一方片面改變台海現狀」。

葛來儀並以自己的觀察，推測歐巴瑪新政府可能尋求的8項政策目標：

1. 推動美國、中國與台灣的「正和」（positive-sum）關係 - 歐巴瑪政府將尋求改變美、中、台3方關係過去的零和（zero-sum）本質，並可能比布希政府更歡迎與鼓勵改善兩岸關係。

2. 修補並強化美台關係 - 美國堅定的支持可讓馬英九更有信心，持續與北京談判，努力達成更穩定和持續的活路模式（modus vivendi）。

3. 鼓勵兩岸進一步改善關係 - 美國將持續鼓勵兩岸協商，尋求解決問題及和平解決歧見，不會採取任何危害兩岸關係改善的步驟。

4. 不更動「一個中國」政策，但可能修改其中說法。 - 美中3項聯合公報與台灣關係法，依然是美中「一中政策」的基礎，歐巴瑪政府也會持續不支持台灣獨立的政策。

5. 要求中國降低對台軍事部署 - 歐巴瑪政府要更迫使中國，減緩對台灣的軍事威脅。在兩岸簽署和平協議前，儘管不能期待中國放棄嚇阻台獨的作為，北京仍可透過凍結短程導彈的部署，撤回一部分必須重新部署否則無法發射的飛彈，以及用一種表明意向以降低威脅的方式，調整其軍事演習，對台表達善意。

6. 堅定支持台灣參與國際組織 - 馬英九執政後，台北採用較務實的方式，尋求讓中華民國有意義參與聯合國，以及成為世界衛生大會的觀察員。歐巴瑪政府可預期將全力支持台灣這些努力，因為這都與美國支持台灣參與，而非成為以國家為會員身分基礎的國際組織會員的政策一致。

7. 與台灣維持強有力的安全關係 - 美國將尋求建立1個能讓台灣覺得安全，又有維持與北京對話誘因的環境。為了達此目的，美國將支持與台灣的經濟與政治關係，並支持台灣擴大參與國際組織。

8. 支持台灣的民主體系 - 歐巴瑪政府會支持反映台灣人民期望的民主體系。

金融危機會進一步惡化, 真正嚴冬未到來.

最近不斷有人和我聊天，他們認為中國經歷過1997年的金融危機，不相信這一次扛不過。我說1997年金融危機算什麼，是發源于泰國、印尼這樣的國家的問題，不能和發源於美國的比啊!這次金融海嘯是百倍、千倍的衝擊，而且會惡化，已經波及到學生貸款、信用卡貸款，你還不緊張嗎?

就在2008年10月上旬，全世界企業和銀行由於信心喪失而面臨全線崩潰，再多一兩個禮拜政府不解決，全球經濟立刻全面崩潰。這就是我所理解的國際金融危機。全球股價大跌，10月份全球股市跌了1萬億美元，美國股市一周跌了27%。從2008年年初跌到10月中旬，美國股市跌掉了8.5萬億美元。這就等於中國2005?2007年3年GDP總和都跌光了。

全球股價大跌的本質意義就是全球經濟全面崩潰，各國領導就沒有一個敢睡覺的，太危險了!

後來，鮑爾森說要把7000億美元的救市方案從收購銀行不良資產轉為幫助信用卡消費以及學生貸款。這句話讓我們感到不寒而慄，也就是說：第一，美國信用卡出了問題;第二，美國消費貸款出了問題;第三，美國學生貸款出了問題。

外銷內銷都有衝擊

出了問題就是還不起錢。他們怎麼開始還不起錢呢?過去的過度消費太超出自己能力，對未來太樂觀，現在扛不住了。怎麼辦?似乎只有一個選擇，就是減少消費。美國的形態因這場危機而改變。

中國過去35%的出口，是別人樂觀、過度的消費吸收的，現在美國老百姓開始悲觀，不刷這麼多信用卡了。這種出口放緩，對我們的衝擊已經慢慢開始顯現。而且這種衝擊不僅是對外銷的衝擊，而且影響到純內銷的企業。

我為了給各位做一個說明不容易，我到中國深圳、上海洗腳、做桑拿按摩，拿一個實際的資料。我問桑拿店的老闆，最近生意怎麼樣?深圳和上海的老闆說生意大約跌了30%。請注意，洗腳、桑拿、按摩是純粹內銷的產業，絕對沒有出口的。這一切你相信嗎?只是剛開始，只是秋天，很多人說嚴冬到了，我告訴你還沒有到，慢慢進入嚴冬，如果現在扛不住的話，未來就沒有希望了。

從GDP工程到民營企業

我認為中國政府提出4萬億經費的積極財政政策，本身就是呼應了危機的前兆。我更關注的是，這筆錢要如何用在刀口上?將這筆錢拿去修橋、鋪路有什麼幫助?天天坐在家?什麼都不幹，修個路就能賺錢嗎?而且很多地方說“要致富，先修路!”這是胡說八道!如果我們的資源大量用到了二元經濟?面過熱的部門，那我們每年還有10%的GDP增長，可是中國老百姓的財富會被歐美各國吸幹，因此我們要把大量的資源從GDP工程轉移到民營企業，有一個很具體的方向就是做每一個產品的“6+1”產業鏈的高效整合。

有些企業家說他準備好了，準備花兩年的時間扛過去。我說你太樂觀了，如果一兩年就不叫蕭條了，叫“手氣不順”，你認為蕭條兩個字是兩年嗎?而且這次美國的金融危機，就像是一個虛胖的人突然得了肺炎垮下來了，醫生給他打了大量抗生素，終於沒有死，但現在的美國什麼“器官”都出問題了，一身的病。“病來如山倒，病去如抽絲”，現在還在治病階段，而且很多器官的病還沒有發出來，那就是所謂的信用行業或者消費、學生貸款同時出了問題。我現在擔心的是：下一步會是什麼?會不會有其他的危機?現在還在發病的階段，不要急著說他什麼時候恢復，因為情況會持續惡化。

如何應付失業低潮

這一波世界金融海嘯來的是又猛又迅, 包括政府, 企業主, 一家之主很多人都是措手不及, 傷害嚴重, 當然也就拖累了大部分的平民百姓. 尤其很多人在這年關將近之際, 不得不面對波波的無薪假甚或是失業無收入, 日子難過可想一般. 在這艱困時下, 我願提出個人經驗與有緣人分享, 希望好朋友們能平順的過此難關.

首先, 我建議要重建家庭生活. 彌補過去在蜂蟻般生活中, 所忽略的夫妻恩愛, 親子互動, 家人同遊, 以及孝親父母的行為. 夫妻此時絕對要以關懷代替抱怨爭吵, 分擔家務代替怨天尤人及苛責政府. 而包括幫夫妻父母老家, 社區大清掃, 除舊布新DIY,迎新年, 是最有意義的活動. 趁此時機常跟父母小住, 聊聊走走. 常幫子女輔導, 說說動動, 跟鄰居, 老同學多多互動, 掰掰唱唱, 都會讓你一家洋溢溫馨, 與鄰里祥和互動. 這也將讓你被回饋的親愛及有誼所擁抱. 而這些深入人心的親情溫暖, 友情關懷, 絕對是你面對人生低潮時的不二良藥. 這樣的生活, 自然讓人精神飽滿而煥發, 時時讓你勇於迎接隔日的任何意外曙光.

其次, 我奉勸要重建健康生活. 失業是一時的, 但絕不是不治之症. 以前民進黨執政想想狀況比現在真的好太多,可是我們把人家罵成那樣子,千錯萬錯都是阿扁的錯,現在馬先生把台灣搞成更加不堪,國將不國,哪天要領人民幣了野有可能,想來也是吾人的報應.我們應利用這失業休息期, 讓自己靜靜的沉澱一下..好好反省我建議一家人都不要再看電視新聞, 看什麼算命弄鬼, 及政論性的批判節目. 更不必關心任何傷身的扁, 反而要緊釘現任總統的作為. 有空聽音樂, 閱讀, 看錄影帶經典電影, 看有關介紹大自然, 運動, 或歷史人文的節目, 以及定期做些簡單方便的運動. 而所閱讀的文章或書, 絕不必是什麼致富之道, 股市操作, 企業名家賺記等等. 最好是有關心靈成長的書, 如道德經, 唐詩, 或我國的歷史書籍, 或個人有需要或興趣的工具書. 另外定期接觸大自然是更應變成一種嗜好. 家人一起走一段田埂或林中小徑, 一起坐ㄧ段溪邊頑石或河隄, 都會啟發很多精神樂趣. 這樣的生活自然會讓人拋開鬱悶煩惱, 同時修身養氣, 達到身心皆旺, 可時時讓你準備迎接隔天的任何旭日再起.。

台灣大學生機會不在中國

大家都知道，馬英九把台灣經濟的希望寄託在中國。筆者不滿的是，為什麼媒體都不質疑他。因為以下數字可以證明他錯了！

中國《每日經濟新聞》報導，根據二○○八年中國十行業就業指數調查結果，截至八月底，仍在找工作的大學畢業生中，有近八成是沒有工作的。這是金融風暴爆發前。

到了金融風暴爆發後，根據中國社科院十二月的估計，沒找到工作的大學生約一五○萬人。去年中國畢業的大學生多少呢？大約五六○萬人。一五○萬除以五六○萬，你說中國大學畢業生失業率多少？何況今年還要畢業六一○萬人。難怪發改委主任張平說「將把解決高校畢業生就業問題，放在當前就業工作的首位」。

另外一個數字是，中國每年新增加的工作機會大概一千萬個，注意這是金融風暴前的數字；但是，每年新增加的求職人口超過二千萬個（包括前面那些大學畢業生）。而整個中國農村，至少還有兩億人要找工作。

還有，昨天網路就有報導，中共中央黨校校委研究室副主任周天勇預估，二○○九年城鎮失業率將達十一％。換算數字，大約有一億個想找工作的中國人找不到工作。以中國官方統計的公信力來說，今年全中國一億好幾千萬人找不到工作，是錯不了的！

請問台灣的大學生，中國自己都火燒屁股，你還覺得台灣經濟希望在中國嗎？你還相信統媒、政客什麼開放大三通、什麼中國到處是機會、什麼鼓勵年輕人去中國開創事業那一套狗屁嗎？人家有工作機會當然先給中國自己人做，有賺錢機會當然先給中國自己人賺，誰理你台灣？又沒比較便宜，也沒比較勤快。

老實說，筆者就經歷過台灣最大的集體說謊—什麼經濟Ｘ報、工商Ｘ報，好幾年前就一天到晚鼓吹「研發在台灣，生產在大陸」。結果呢？既然工廠在大陸，研發當然就近設在大陸。既然生產、研發都在大陸，結果就是整個公司都搬過去了！失業？你家的事。台灣經濟就是從那句口號開始被唬爛了！敝公司就是已經搬得差不多了，筆者陷入過不過去的困擾（我們這種剛來幹沒幾年的，不過去就滾蛋，過去也是鐵定沒幾年就要滾回來，中國不缺資訊科技人才，學得又快。筆者就聽說，某大公司在中國的Ｘ艦二期已經停擺，一票台幹回台灣賦閒），才徹底明白這些政客媒體玩什麼把戲。

統媒，和馬英九一樣，既然「終極統一」，當然中國是他們的「終極關懷」。台灣的就業問題，你多為自己想想；不如學馬英九搞個綠卡，美中台三地通吃吧！

根據他查到的資料，除了已知的哩哩摳摳一大堆犯罪事實之外，還查到李慶安在台灣向監察院報財產的時候漏報 3 處房產。

李慶安的老爸李換是國民黨的大老，在國民黨內應該是根深蒂固。我不太相信國民黨會讓李慶安接受法律制裁。如果連這麼深的根都罩不住，那可能表示國民黨的舊有勢力與結構可能正在瓦解。再加上「馬吳連」（馬無連？）三巨頭明爭暗鬥，以及馬英九的無能造成的民心潰散，馬英九的權力基礎看起來非常脆弱不穩。

還有，各位不知有沒有注意到，馬英九最近幾個月的言行，好像有心智散渙、精神失常的傾向。譬如說，大英圖書館講成大英百貨（照稿念還會唸錯），胡錦濤講成胡耀邦。

對台灣人而言這可能是一個契機。拭目以待。

政壇奇葩胡志強的另類「台中奇蹟」

最會做人、最擅表演的超人氣市長

沒有亮眼政績，卻保有超高人氣，胡志強依靠媒體形象，加上人和的風格，粉碎了「政績是檢驗政治人物」的定律！看來胡志強在台中市長任內，創造了另類的「台中奇蹟」。

閣揆民調他第一名。當了台中市長七年，如果縣市合併升格，誰是最佳市長人選？他的民調也第一。中科開發完全是民進黨在中央執政時代所主導，與胡志強「關係不深」，但民調問誰是最大功勞者？他竟然也第一。

諷刺的是，胡志強這位「民調達人」，擔任台中市長七年了，如問台中市民他有什麼政績？恐怕沒有幾人說得上來；而他任內推動的兩大建設，古根漢美術館早已胎死腹中；二○○八年二月應該完工的國際會展中心，則因工程糾紛，市府與承包的鄉林建設對簿公堂，目前留下的大窟窿（挖開的地基），還成為台中港路旁的危險工地！

老婆、女兒都是演員，表演功力不如胡志強！

沒有政績，民調卻能一路長紅，胡志強主要是受惠於電子媒體的表演政治，讓一位地方諸侯，卻常保全國性知名度的光環。前經建會副主委張景森就曾當面消遣他：「胡志強的老婆與女兒都是專業演員，但兩人加起來的表演功力卻還不如胡志強！」

渾然天成的表演身段，加上口才便給，反應機敏，胡志強不僅總讓媒體追著跑，遇到負面新聞也常被他四兩撥千斤。如同樣在去年颱風來襲時出國，台東縣長鄺麗貞被媒體Ｋ得滿頭包，胡志強面對媒體追問他的出國與鄺麗貞有什麼不同時，他竟開玩笑的說：「當然不同，我是男的，她是女的」，媒體的追殺氣氛立刻打折三分。接著他委屈抱怨「台灣民主政治還未成熟，才不允許縣市長在颱風天出國去拚城市外交！」的先告狀，還搏到不少台中市民為他抱屈。

又如陳雲林在晶華酒店被包圍那一夜，胡志強被一抗議民眾的口水吐個正著，隔天他也不以為忤，滿臉笑意地的在鏡頭前說：「終於體會到什麼叫唾面自乾！」

懂媒體，能滿足新聞需求，讓胡志強和記者關係水乳交融。加上他曾任新聞局長，與報社、電視台的主管熟稔，他的新聞總受到優遇。

而他另一項「與人為善」的功夫，則讓他在市長任內，顯得政通人和，民進黨籍的台中市議員黃國書就曾說：「馬英九沒有朋友，胡志強沒有敵人。」胡志強喜歡交朋友，而且不分藍綠。所以縱然政黨立場不同的市議員，要批評、責難他，也都點到為止，避免撕破臉而「歹勢」。

○八年底台中市議會召開期間，胡志強請假出國，惹來「藐視議會」的罵名，藍綠議員還在議事堂演出拉扯風波，民進黨議員一副準備大幹一場的架式，但胡志強回國後，一出席議會即將火爆氣氛消弭於無形，令外界對胡志強安撫議員的功力不得不佩服。

當過外交部長的胡志強功過固然難定，他對外交的箇中三昧：「把敵人拉到中間，把中間的拉到自己陣營」的功夫，發揮得淋漓盡致。台中市議會有四十六席議員，民進黨有十七席、台聯一席，在野席次已算不低，但七年來很少讓人感受民進黨台中市議會黨團的戰力。

以張溫鷹市長任內，號稱是「三劍客」的何敏誠、張廖萬堅、黃國書三議員為例，自胡志強就任以來，質詢分貝明顯降低許多。惹得前市長張溫鷹的先生陳文憲不滿，曾在公開場合吐槽民進黨議員「政黨錯亂」，只會修理自家黨籍市長，對胡志強反而愛護有加。

「善於處理人，這是胡志強的一大強項」。一位親綠企業主這麼說：「他可以在很短時間內，就讓接觸他的人很舒服」，「這種功夫好像是天生，學也學不來」。發生在吳念真身上的一件事，就可見胡志強人際處理的細膩。

天生善於處理人的功夫

○五年胡志強尋求連任台中市長時，挑戰他的綠營對手林佳龍，文宣原要委託廣告創意名人吳念真的顧問公司，且親自上門敦請吳念真出馬跨刀。但吳念真對送上門來的生意敬謝不敏。拒絕的理由有二：一是他對台中不熟；二是他不想得罪胡志強。

吳念真說，他和胡志強不算很熟，但連續好幾年，胡志強都會在春節寄來禮物，禮物雖然不是很貴重，但很貼心。○五年春節寄的是兩瓶洋酒，胡志強親自在紙盒上寫了兩行字：「阿扁連任，你一定很爽，這兩瓶酒讓你喝得更爽！」吳念真表示，面對這樣善意的朋友，實在不想與他為敵。

不過，胡志強善於處理人的功夫，也不是無往不利，他與馬英九的互動就令人好奇。尤其是馬剛要就任總統的前夕，他一再在媒體放話說：「是否願意到總統府當祕書長，要民調台中市民同不同意放人」的說詞，始終未見馬英九陣營回應，讓人狐疑他是不是在「自抬身價」，或者「自導自演」?!

之後，胡志強又公開說：「國民黨完全執政，我要當烏鴉」，以及幾次要下「指導棋」意味的說詞，同樣未見國民黨高層理會。胡志強雖然三番兩次在馬面前自稱「老大哥」，不少人揣測馬英九對他不是那樣麻吉。甚至，傳言他和馬之間存有心結，所以國民黨封了一大堆副主席，胡志強都沒份。

治安不安，環保不保，交通不通？

胡志強的與人為善，不限政界，台中商界除了極少數因合作後反目的鄉林建設董事長賴正鎰外，多數對他都深具好感，一位建設公司董事長說：「除非是法律不允許，胡志強幾乎是有求必應，而且會讓你具體感受他的誠懇。」

例如中台灣土地炒得最為火熱的七期重劃區，依容積的總量管制，大樓平均只能蓋十三層。但現在寸土寸金的該區，到處是二、三十層以上的大廈，這就是台中市府允許建商「容積移轉」的成果，在多蓋一層樓，就能多賺幾千萬元下，不少建商大發利市。而胡志強也從不迴避他和建商的親密，他自己就住在七期的聯聚東方大廈，與台中的指標建商聯聚建設總經理江韋侖當起好鄰居。

胡志強的做人功夫出神入化，但做事的功夫卻讓人不敢恭維。一位國民黨籍的公職就說：「胡志強是歷屆台中市長中，最不做事的市長！」國民黨籍的前市長林柏榕一度也對胡志強的做事態度頗有微詞。○六年胡志強要競選連任的前夕，他還表示胡志強要具結承諾願意做事，他才願意再輔選。

檢視胡志強七年的政績，除了幾場音樂活動如帕華洛帝、波伽利的演唱會，以及一年一度的爵士音樂節外，市民很難感受胡志強做了什麼？不僅硬體建設屈指可數，七年來台中市的治安始終敬陪末座，黯淡的中區復甦無方，市容髒亂依舊，中港路、中清路、五權西路三條對外幹線塞車連連，可以說是「治安不安，環保不保，交通不通」！這樣的胡志強，誰說他不是政壇奇葩?!

台灣是沒政府了？

“卸煤碼頭”這個問題除了與基隆人有關外，更是與國家的「環境政策」、「海洋政策」、「能源政策」以及「觀光政策」息息相關。但也不清楚為何這樣的訊息一直上不了全國性的媒體版面？

實在搞不清楚，哪時候開始台灣的經建會變成如此的無三小路用？台電可以不管無正當興建理由、不管環評、不管經建會？

在台灣解嚴的隔年 ── 1988 年，一群關心八斗子公共事務的鄉親們，力邀當時已俱有社會知名度的王拓先生，共同來討論如何反北部火力發電廠復廠及八斗子垃圾掩埋場的繼續使用，並且組成了八斗子自救委員會。那時因反杜邦而有所經驗的粘鍚麟老師也自掏腰包特別從鹿港來到八斗子，與鄉親們座談，提供寶貴的經驗給大家。那一年，閒居在八斗子，鄉親們說都沒有年輕人願意參與地方事務，就抱著湊人數的心情，卻陰錯陽差之下見証了八斗子鄉親們的「英勇事蹟」。

參與八斗子自救會的核子成員，都是當地五十歲以上的一群歐里桑、歐巴桑。出席了幾次討論會，常有人說到不平處就會大聲的說：台灣是沒政府了？聽在當時不到三十歲的我的耳中，總認為有話就好好的說，幹麼動不動就說：台灣沒政府了。後來我們包了遊覽車到台電去抗議，大家舉白布條、手持標語，台電總算退讓了，不再堅持要讓北火復廠。而針對反垃圾掩埋場的繼續使用，則是由一群鄉親們橫躺在馬路上阻擋垃圾車進出，用生命捍衛家鄉環境的決心讓我們的訴求獲得全勝。

2008 年八斗子地區最大的公共議題是「反對深澳電廠卸煤碼頭」，而投身於「拚經濟」的我，實難以分身於「救環境」。不時有朋友會傳送相關的訊息、活動給我，主事的幾位熱心人士都是熟識的老朋友，每個都深俱土地情感，長期為地方付出，我也樂於享受大家努力的成果。今天下午因緣聚會下，陪同海洋台灣文教基金會的劉光明執行長、林黎彩董事出席由「我愛番仔澳連線」所主辦的一場與台電的辯論會。結果台電方面沒人出席，臨時改為「反卸煤碼頭記者會」。主辦單位很費心的邀請了幾位學者專家出席這場辯論會，包括劉光明

1. 美國14參議員連署, 要布希盯住馬英九侵犯台灣人自由與民主等人權的現象. 美國商業安全局說, 高科技武器賣台灣, 已經無法保證馬英九會不會轉呈給中國, 所以必須防範! 台美人應該提醒美國國會, 中國獲得的最大宗美國武器科技, 多半來自以色列! 以色列數十年來, 全民聯中滅台的意向極為明顯.

2. 美聯社直接點名馬英九是尼克森翻版, 以公權力打壓台灣政敵與台灣人.

3. 北縣政績吊車尾, 出奇招救民生, 堅持擴大抓野狗部隊的編制, 於是縣內阿公阿媽通通去報名應徵. 大家也都很納悶.. 您這位進口縣長, 豬頭上的烏紗帽都快沒了, 還忙著滅掉豬尾巴上的小火苗呢, 周熄尾縣長!

4. 馬桶經濟下民不聊生, 軍公教娛樂消費貸款無上限, 利息1.92%, 農民拿土地去農會與土銀辦貸款買農藥, 貸款金額低得可憐, 利息卻要4%以上, 意思是說.. 農民若想買農藥自殺, 成本上, 竟比軍公教找女人的娛樂費還要貴!

5. 大學生一畢業, 助學貸款約欠50萬元, 利息2.05%, 畢業後每月負擔5000多元, 要付100個月以上. 以前年輕人畢業就負債, 現在很多人是畢業就破產, 工作不保, 所有帳戶被查封, 個人及家人連帶信用破產, .. 有人因繳不起助學貸款, 希望協商被銀行拒絕, 銀行以醜陋的嘴臉相向, 馬上強迫學生將利息由2.05%拉高到6.66% (否則要求立即還清!), 同時間再透由法院逼債! 馬桶經濟下, 台灣的銀行嘴臉極度囂張, 一腳進法院逼債, 一腳進討債公司賣債權給黑道! 台中學生爆料, 目前全台灣, 沒錢唸書, 辦休學的大學生高達15%!

6. 勞貸事件歹戲拖棚, 880萬勞工於13天之內, 被准貸紓困的才14萬4000人, 紓貸者必須有工作, 或剛被解職, 須有勞保, 勞保金足夠申貸才行, 所以, 勞工等於是拿自己的錢幫自己, 目前雖延長2週申請, 額度卻只剩50億, 預計不到6天就沒錢可貸了! 比起貸款無上限的軍公教, 勞工是標準賤民! 勞保局實際提領年終獎金竟達4.5個月, 不是3.1個月! 勞保局說台灣失業率4.6%, 經濟日報批馬戲班嚴重說謊, 已經100萬失業, 失業率破10%.

7. 健保局賤事又一樁, 貧戶因太太住院花費過大, 欠健保費1萬多元(四口人四個月)(等於兩次未繳), 健保局不向台北市馬英九追究800億, 瀆職與挪用公款等罪行, 竟叫法院查封該貧戶郵局與銀行戶頭共1000多元的生活費. 下月份健保費堅持要全民漲價, 畜牲當道, 全民遭殃!

8. 40.1萬個軍公教退休人員的18%利息, 幾乎拖垮台灣經濟與縣市經濟, 台灣每個月要付這些米蟲64億元, 每年共付800億元. 這些都是中國進口黨的米蟲投票部隊. 反觀, 880萬勞工, 在馬英九與其馬戲班的眼裡是啥?

9. 中國進口黨, 最近在人事行政局, 狗腿子局長的踏青號召下, 吹起公務人員踏青玩球運動, 高官們互打乒乓球, 中階公務人員展現踢皮球的功力, 馬英九的馬戲團則一球三玩, 乒乓球, 踢皮球之外, 還玩躲避球. 至於馬長瘤10人小組還有一項任務, 那就是玩高爾夫球, 打飛機, 天天打空砲彈. 至於法院和立法院嘛, 都還在玩假奶球和水球的遊戲, 比賽說謊之餘, 還演行動劇, 泡(非砲)打自己人, 演給人民看.

10.阿扁乙案, 了無新意, 我們昨天就說對了, 高院禁止律師抗告, 不准再抗告. 就中國侵略台灣後的體制來看, 爬到高院已經很不容易, 搖尾巴是天天要做的事. 在台灣, 對不對的基準點在法律人, 不在法律. 法律人爽不爽, 會不會影響到他的工作或前途, 都有法律幫他背書, 決定對錯; 人民其實只是個【屁】. 想想中華民國侵略台灣的文化, 蔣借屎如何看待他們的中華民國? 馬英九怎麼看待他們國家的國旗? 法律人自然是以同樣角度看待法律, 那就是【衛生紙文化】, 三大原則.. 私人工具, 用途廣泛, 用完即丟! 在此重提昨天一段話.. 馬英九選舉, 聽說台商就給了他近十億政治獻金, 另外, 還有三大科技公司各給他10億 (其他.. 例如陳敏勳等等..另計.), 所以, 不紓困給這些柱仔腳, 怎說得過去? 支助這些中國籍台商, 也算是幫祖國稅收作創匯呀, 一舉兩得! 李遠哲納悶問道..阿扁收政治獻金叫做貪污, 馬英九和國民黨, 從立委選舉到總統選舉, 收數倍到數十倍, 就叫政治獻金, 差那麼多? 難道特賤組不用查? 特賤組回答說”他們是中國人和中國註冊過的二狗子耶, 只有台灣賤民才須查呀!”

11.阿扁乙案, 台北地院換法官, 被查出, 竟然只是庭長間的協調與自願, 不鳥規定. 高院頌揚地院二狗子行為是高尚的. 阿扁在看守所裡慢跑, 被中國進口媒體偷拍, 拍攝地點竟是看守所行政大樓往外拍攝. 法院與檢察署果然是中國人開的!

12.高雄潮寮國中國小, 百餘師生因大發工業區嚴重中毒, 馬英九的馬戲班團隊找不到毒源! 目前醫院無法解毒, 且恐有後遺症產生! 無法置信的是, 在環保局專業監視下, 該校四次聞毒住院, 然後環保局說找不到毒源! 環保局長沈世宏到現場開會, 說完馬英九是大有為政府之後, 態度不佳, 假藉理由匆匆落跑, 大家在猜, 不知他是否逃回他的祖國加拿大求援去了.. 他是馬英九的人, 自然怕死, 自然不敢應邀住在該村幾個晚上. 由於老師中毒者眾, 學校缺老師, 即使中毒+懷孕, 還是要教書, 到廁所吐完, 還是要回教室上課, 多人咳出血. 學生天天喊肚子痛, 哭, 吐, 暈, 虛脫, 情況極慘! 馬英九那幾天, 幾乎天天在高雄吃大餐綁樁, 早就知道此事, 就是不敢去看, 大家早就知道他怕死怕事, 這種人不應該罵畜牲? 期間, 有中國籍家長83歲,國中三年級的兒子中毒, 當父親的, 因心急, 心肌梗塞死亡! 村民說要高雄縣長幫忙申請國賠, 每人先撥十萬治病, 新潮流的楊秋興縣長哼了一聲走人, 中國官僚氣勢十足, 反正縣長任期已經屆滿, 誰鳥你! 監察院王建宣說這是小屁屁的事, 不歸監察院管, 與葉耀鵬監委拒絕理會! 經濟日報要馬英九不要再演戲, 不要光做表面功夫了! 中國籍南方朔說馬英九不但無心, 也無意願替台灣做事! 國校女老師氣到大罵馬英九應該改名牛英九, 假純潔, 以沉默掩飾欺騙, 凡事不願意做, 還自以為清高, 全都被看破手腳!

13.藍鳥人在找黃芳彥, 中國進口的特賤組故意放話說黃只是證人不是被告, 企圖邀黃回台共商如何陷害阿扁; 釣魚氣氛濃厚; 前兩周辜家陷害阿扁, 最近也被起訴了, 檢察官不告, 法官依然整死你, 全是騙局一場! 台灣是有不少人建議, 協尋馬英九在美國失散許久的兩個女兒, 若知道下落, 預計要勸其回國! 同時回饋中國進口的馬英九亂台的辛勞. 聽說這兩人, 原則上離不開馬英九陷害百餘台灣人的老巢波士頓, 或馬英九的親屬聚集地NYC(法拉盛區).

14.李慶安昨天說她根本沒有在美國繳過稅.., 所以不是美國籍. 她已經招了..沒有在美國繳過稅.. 不就是說.. 在美國沒有繳過稅, 那就是說自己從開始到現在都有逃漏美國稅? 看樣子, 她事情大條了, 台美人應盡速施壓國務院通緝她. 中國進口黨, 昨在立院阻擋有關取消李慶安立委資格問題, 沒啥唸書的, 雲林縣出名的二狗子張碩刎明目張膽出賣台灣價值! 中國進口黨似乎已經透過外交部, 企圖逼迫美國公開說李慶安已經放棄美國籍, 所以才會要大家等到月底再說! 其實這些二狗子怕的是.. 援例辦馬英九. 繼外交部拒絕將美國相關公函提交給立法院, 昨天外交部同樣拒絕檢察署…馬英九涉案似乎很明顯! 台美人應該呼籲美國國會通緝李慶安, 快刀斬亂麻!

San Diego is planning to close libraries!!!

I received this very alarming message:

Did you know that our city is planning to close several branches of the public library? This includes my very own branch in Ocean Beach. I know there are budget problems, but in my opinion this is not a good solution.

If you are also concerned you could email your city council person and/or mayor sanders to protest. I just did so. If your branch is one of the ones that may be closed there may also be local protests. I will be protesting in Ocean Beach on Saturday at noon. I think the mayor is claiming that the branches to be closed are not heavily used. I can't speak about the other branches, but for the Ocean Beach branch, this is simply not true. If you go in there are always lots of people there. (I think they may not all be checking out books, but they are there reading newspapers, magazines and books and using the computers. For many in Ocean Beach, this may be the only place they have computer access.)

Libraries are places where children, senior citizens and low income people can access books. For some in these groups traveling further to get another branch is not a good option.

Protestiert Gegen Polizeibrutalitaet!! Verteidigt Freiheit und Menschenrecht. (Statment in German)

Angefangen am 3. November, mit dem Besuch von Chen Yunlin, hat die Polizei zahlreiche Aktionen gegen Demonstranten durchgeführt, darunter die Beschlagnahmung und Zerstoerung von Eigentum, physische Gewalt, und sogar Verhaftungen. Die große Mehrheit der betroffenen Demonstranten befand sich nicht einmal in der Nähe von Chen Yunlin.

Durch Berichte in den Medien haben wir den Ernst der Situation erkannt. Es geht nicht nur um Details bei der Strafverfolgung, noch handelt es sich einfach um einen Konflikt zwischen Anhaengern verschiedener politischer Parteien. Es geht vielmehr um Polizeigewalt, die vom Staat gefördert wird und die die Zivilgesellschaft beschaedigt.

Alle diese Aktionen, die Menschenrechte und demokratische Werte ignorieren, erinnern an das Kriegsrecht. Aber der Premier Liu weicht seiner Verantwortung mit unklaren Entschuldigungen aus. Diese Reaktionen der Regierung empören und beschaemen uns.

Wir fragen uns: Muss Taiwan seine Standards bei Freiheit und Demokratie bis auf das Niveau von China senken, um mit China wirtschaftlich kooperieren zu können?

Innerhalb weniger Tage sind Freiheit und Demokratie, für die die Taiwanesen so hart gekaempft haben, durch die Polizeiaktionen ernsthaft beschaedigt worden. Unsere Regierung ignoriert dies und veranstaltet stattdessen Empfaenge und Bankette für den Gast aus China.

Wir sind eine Gruppe von Universitaetsprofessoren, Studenten, und Bürgern, die sich Sorgen um die zukünftige Entwicklung Taiwans machen. Unser Protest ist überparteilich und unabhaengig von anderen politischen Organisationen.

【明報專訊】台灣近日認真熱鬧，前總統陳水扁(相關)被扣手銬嘅鏡頭，已經為關心兩岸人士增添不少話題，此外台灣嘅大學生亦發起「野草莓」行動（寓意學生係壓不扁嘅草莓）抗議，不但引起台灣人關注，連香港學生都舉手參加。

「野草莓」發言人李立偉，噚日同Emily嘅台灣同事講，香港專上學生聯會今日會同50個大學生，喺理工大學靜坐，聲援台灣學生。李立偉又話，美國哈佛大學法學院都已經聯署支持「野草莓」學運。

學生口中嘅「學運」，係抗議早前大陸海協會會長陳雲林訪台期間，台灣警察執法時侵犯人權，大家決定發起「學運」要求總統馬英九(相關)道歉。

其實「學運」又好，抗議又好，台大學生講明，今次要同唔同地區嘅大學生搞「網絡串連」，實行藉着網絡世界一呼天下應，今日就要睇吓啲學生係咪咁齊心連成一線。

MSN、Twitter、Plurk、Ptt、Yahoo!Live、3.5G、YouTube......，成為野草莓學運的集結管道與發聲選項，學生們充分運用了現代網路科技，有別於傳統的樁腳動員方式，這是屬於web2.0新世代的學運。

1106的圍城抗爭中，上街抗議群眾主要仍是透過黨部、樁腳、主流媒體來動員發聲，但同時開始進行的野草莓學運，組織動員方式卻有很大不同，學生與鄉民主要是透過括Ptt、MSN、Twitter等網路管道動員參與，他們也架設部落格宣傳抗議訴求，部落客也紛紛撰文支持。

野草莓運動部落格中，除了表達抗議訴求以外，還有相當豐富的資訊，包括現場直播、相關影片、部落客評論等，由公民記者Rousseau製作的野草莓運動聲音影片中，參與靜坐的學生充分表達了自己的聲音，有人對擔憂自己的母親喊話，「媽，我知道你很擔心我們....，媽，我真的知道我在做什麼，我們在做對的事情。」也有人表達參與活動的理念，「來這裡是為了要證明，民主對台灣人來講，不只是香水而已，民主對我們來講，是很重要的價值，而我們正捍衛著...」。

相較於傳統媒體的聲音，部落格、MSN、Twitter、Plurk、YouTube的訊息更多元，發聲管道更多重，對傳媒報導內容的指正，似乎也再度驗證傳媒真實的不真實性。

遊覽車集結北上？這是老一代的活動方式，新世代的野草莓充分發揮網路跨地域的特質，除了台北自由廣場的主線，還延伸了新竹場、台中場、台南場、高雄場等抗議現場，串聯與轉播的方式是Yahoo!Live、宣傳小貼紙、網上連署，用幾台NootBook無線上網，巧妙的運用了Yahoo!Live做為現場直播功能，讓大家隨時在網路看到全台的靜坐情形，還有學生用國台語、英語講解現場狀況。

野莓之聲我不是溫室花朵...

「我不是溫室花朵，你也不用假裝溫柔」，「我們有屬於我們的夢我們有我們的話想說」沒有愛國歌曲與古板教條，野草莓學運中被傳唱，甚至改編成MV的歌曲，是由網友nelleven創作的「野莓之聲」，nelleven在個人部落格上表示，支持學生獨立思考與實行精神，還幽默的說，「我野草苺永遠不會是野百合，因為我們搾成汁之後，是還可以喝的」。

A Picasa Mystery

A friend of mine was mystified that he could not add captions to his PicasaWeb album pictures. He added captions and saved the changes. To his surprise and dismay, the published album did not change a bit - the captions he added just refused to show. I didn't know what happened when he called, because he was in a different town. But I had an idea. I believed the program he used to add picture captions did so on his PC, but not on the album that resides on google's server machine. This was easily confirmed when I asked him to first sign in google. From here on I can be sure whether changes will happen on his machine or on the server. In this case, he first logged into gmail. Then on the first line, he clicked the photos link to go to PicasaWeb. Once there, he was able to add captions to pictures and more and see the effect of such changes immediately.

The title sounds self-contradictory. An expert should be literate, so should not need Computer Literacy education, right? Perhaps you can help me come up with better terms.

In the sumer of 2008, I taught a course to a group of outstanding computer science students at ITESO, Guadalajara. The topics I covered included:

The tabbing and extensible browser Firefox. Extensions.
Google family of software, such as Gmail, Groups, Doc and Spreadsheet, PicasaWeb, Blogger, etc.
Server-side and Client-side web authoring.
Emacs.
Python programming.
Functional Programming.

These topics were selected to instantly empower the students. At the same time, they present fundamental concepts of:

extensible software such as Firefox and Emacs
client/server technology
publishing and collaboration
procedural, object-oriented, and functional programming

I called this special course Computer Literacy for Experts.

Don't email pictures, publish albums instead

To share more than one or two pictures, it is easier to publish an album than to use email. For publishing photo albums, I recommend Google's PicasaWeb, whose use requires no computer expertise and using which albums can be published in a matter of minutes by unsophisticated users. There are many highly usable album software that make it easy to automate album creation such as making it easy to annotate pictures, arrange them in different orders or hierarchies, etc. I have been using Python-based PyAlbum.

Since the amazing 830 Anti-Ma rally, I received tons of 830 pictures through emails. One batch was unreadable by most recipients because the pictures had been uuencoded and few knows what to do with them. Resetting/Changing Mac Password

Among the many computers that John owns is a MacBookPro that sits on his bookshelves gathering dust. "Why are you wasting such a beautiful piece of machinery?", I asked. John was embarrassed: "I forgot my password, tried so many different combinations, but none worked."

I searched google, found this article: Mac OS X Password Recovery | Elliot Lee and did the following as instructed:

reboot while pressing Cmd-S
type the following commands at prompt:
/sbin/fsck -y
/sbin/mount -uw /
/sbin/SystemStarter

This unfortunately did not work. SystemStarter never returned on this Mac OS X 10.5.x machine and did not respond to ctl-C or ctl-Z. But it turned out that I could change John's password with just two commands:

/sbin/mount -uw /
/usr/bin/passwd john

Here, john was John's username.

When traveling, I frequently run into sub-optimally working computer systems that

waste people's time, day in and day out
are awfully under-utilized

A typical example is a computer with a powerful Intel Pentium 4 CPU, yet absolutely inadequate internal memory (such as 512 MB), or harddrive space (such as 20 GB). Another example: in a family of many computers, with a DSL conection, both wired and wreless Internet access and a very high-end HP network color printer, the printer was connected to a desktop computer using a USB port, instead of directly connected to the network and used as a network printer. Why? Because the owner or the installer did not know any better.

When I upgraded the Pentium 4 system to two Gigabytes of memory costing less than $45, the speed improvement was immediate. In the second scenario, when the printer was properly installed as a network printer and all household computers were set up once to use the printer, all compuers started to print conveniently to the network printer. The owners are left wondering how they had suffered for years from snail-like slow speed and from the great inconveniences with printing.

Why you should use Firefox

For two reasons:

It is a tabbing browser. Everybody should be using a tabbing browser, which enables one to display n web pages simultaneously using n tabs in one single browser window. In contrast, for a non-tabbing browser such as old IE, this opens up n browser windows cluttering your precious desktop space. This used to be reason enough to use Firefox, but no longer. Firefox makes it necessary for any browser to be a tabbing browser to survive in the market place.
The most important reason to use Firefox is that it is extensible. There are many extensions or add-ons that you can install on your copy of Firefox to add functionalities to it. For myself, all of my client computers run Firefox with different sets of add-ons installed. The intersection includes:

It is widely known that Microsoft owns Taiwan. Here is a news that says that Microsoft has over 98 percent of market share in Taiwan. How frightening is this?

More than 98% of computers in Government offices, schools, companies, and families pay hefty sums to Microsoft for software licenses. This adds up to monies that boggles the mind.
Even more frightening is the fact that many Taiwanese simply identify computing with Microsoft technologies. In many universities, for example Tamkang University (淡江大學), the distinction between computer science and Microsoft technologies becomes unclear: computer education is Microsoft software training.

What to do?

Use better and free software such as Linux distributions and Google family of programs (Doc & Spreadsheets, Calendar, Picasaweb, ...)
Teach fundamental Computing principles. Refrain from software training of particular vendors.
